High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens has a shocking secret – she carries a Taser in her purse.

The actress tells Self magazine that she carries the weapon for self-defence.

"I’m moving into a house by myself, and it’s scary," she said.

And Disney star Hudgens, 20, admits she is ready to take on movie roles that would toughen her up.

"I’d like to do an action film where I could kick someone’s ass. I want to be strong and empowered," said Hudgens.

Hudgens is seeing her High School Musical co-star Zac Efron.
