Miley Cyrus and her alter ego Hannah Montana have proved they’re still queen of the tweens – as Hannah Montana: The Movie heads straight to the top of the U.S. box office.
The film raked in a whopping $34million at the weekend overtaking Fast & Furious, which pulled in $28million for its second weekend.
The movie is the first feature-length installment of the Disney Channel series about an ordinary teen, Miley, living a double life as pop star Hannah.
The film had been expected to draw thousands of pre-teen girls, or “tweens”, and their mothers to theatres.
But the film performed better than its $20million goal thanks to teenagers that have remained fans, according to industry experts.
“While girls 12 and younger and their moms made up most of the audience, Hannah Montana also attracted a solid crowd of teenage girls, fans reaching the age when they might be outgrowing the show,” said Disney film president Mark Zoradi.
